Year 10 Students Exploring Genetics at La Trobe University

Year 10 students went to La Trobe University on 31st May, as part of their genetics subject. The ‘Get Into Genes-Biotechnology’ workshop allowed students to explore the application of biotechnology to selective breeding in the agricultural industry. In the first component of this workshop students had a small lecture relating to the importance and impact of genetics at this present time.

Rotating through four workstations, students got to extract DNA and gain experience of techniques such as restriction enzyme analysis and gel electrophoresis which are important components for GMO and DNA profiling. They acquired an understanding of how these modern genetic engineering tools are used by Australian scientists and researchers to breed farm animals and crops better suited to the changing environment. Students worked through examples of selective breeding using phenotype and genotype data for both plants and animals.

This 2 hour workshop allowed students a good understanding of genetics and its use in the food industry.
